Sotheby's to auction sneakers designed by the late Virgil Abloh
Sotheby's is set to auction sneakers designed by the late US fashion icon Virgil Abloh. Two hundred pairs of special edition "Louis Vuitton x Nike Air Force 1" will be open for bidding soon. The former artistic director of Louis Vuitton's menswear died in November 2021 due to cancer.
The auction will run from Jan. 26 through Feb. 9. This will mark the first release of the sneakers designed by Abloh for the spring-summer 2022 collection, Sotheby’s said.
The 200 pairs of special-edition sneakers are entirely made in calf leather, embellished with Louis Vuitton’s emblematic monogram and damier patterns with natural cowhide piping. The shoes were also styled with Abloh’s signature quotation marks and are available in men’s sizes from 5 to 18.
100% of the proceeds will benefit The Virgil Abloh “Post-Modern” Scholarship Fund.
On January 20, LV will be presenting Abloh’s Fall 2022 menswear collection at Paris Fashion Week in which Michael Burke — chairman and CEO of Louis Vuitton — confirms was 95% finished prior to the designer’s tragic passing.
